A container is the outer file format; codecs describe how the picture and sound are encoded. An editor may accept MP4 files but reject a less common codec inside them, a damaged partial download, or a filename whose extension does not match its contents.
Use this workflow only for media you created, own, or have explicit permission to save. Platform terms and local law still apply even when a file is technically accessible.

Complete the workflow step by step
- Prepare.
Play the file in a reliable desktop player to separate a download problem from an editor compatibility problem.
- Set up.
Check whether the download completed and whether both video and audio streams were merged successfully.
- Create.
When necessary, create a new MP4 using a broadly compatible H.264 video track and AAC audio track with a trusted local converter.
- Review.
Import the converted copy into PeteCut and compare duration, synchronization, and visual quality with the authorized source.

Open the completed file before moving on. Confirm duration, picture, sound, orientation, and filename so a bad source does not travel into the editing stage.
